Startup Weekend

June 3, 2011 by IP.comEvents0

We love startups. And we love the cartoons Hugh MacLeod draws on the backs of business cards and publishes at gapingvoid.com and his larger format art he displays online at gapingvoidgallery.com, where you can buy limited edition prints like this “cube grenade” he created for Rackspace. Not only does Hugh draw insightful cartoons, he’s written two thought-filled books that are must-reads for everyone planning a startup. Ignore Everybody and Evil Plans.

Speaking of startups, this is Startup Weekend.

Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable.  On average, half of Startup Weekend’s attendees have technical backgrounds, the other half have business backgrounds.

Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts.

This weekend is Startup Weekend in Toronto, Canada, San Francisco, Raleigh-Durham, Denver and Boston in the USA, Madrid, Spain, and Marseilles, France. Upcoming events will be in more cities around the world.

We’ll be in Toronto for Startup Weekend. How ’bout you?

Oh, yeah, and we’re following @StartupWeekend on Twitter, too. See you there.

  • Tim Kingan: Mark, yes, your point about searching broadly and narrowing with use of technology class (and subclass) is important. However, when searching non-patent literature, proximity operators would be very useful, since keywords often need to be seen in their context in order to manage a workload. Scirus goes part way there by displaying snippets of text which may display more than one of provided keywords. However, for those tools I know of (Google Scholar, Scirus and now ip.com), proximity operators seem not to be available. View Post
